The average public-sector worker earns 11.7% more than the average private-sector worker, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

As of November, the average full-time employee earned $1888.80 per week in 'ordinary time earnings' (i.e. excluding overtime), which included averages of $1845.00 for the private sector and $2061.10 for the public sector.

Public-sector workers traditionally earn more than private-sector workers, as the graph shows. But that salary gap has grown, with public workers enjoying a bigger year-on-year increase in earnings than private (4.9% vs 4.4%).
