The median tenure across Australia is nine years for a house and eight years for a unit, according to Domain โ although there are differences between the capital cities.
Domain's research also found that areas with long tenure typically have higher prices, and that tenure has been steadily increasing over the past two decades.
One reason for the increase in tenure may be that some people are dissuaded by high stamp duty costs. Another may be that some people canโt afford to move due to rising property prices, and so decide to renovate or extend instead.
