Tasmania has taken the top spot in the CommSec State of the States ranking, for the 12th time in 14 quarters.
CommSec assesses states by comparing their current performance with their long-term averages, based on eight indicators:
* Dwelling starts = Tasmania ranked #1
* Equipment investment = Tasmania
* Unemployment = New South Wales
* Population growth = South Australia
* Housing finance = Queensland
* Economic growth = Western Australia
* Construction work = Victoria
* Retail spending = ACT
CommSec said there was little to separate Tasmania from New South Wales, South Australia and Queesland, suggesting there might be a new leader when the next quarterly rankings are revealed.
