If youโ€™ve ever wondered how many property investors there are in Australia, and how many properties they own, the Australian Taxation Office has the answer.

According to data recently released by the ATO, about one in seven taxpayers, or 14.8%, were property investors in the 2021 financial year.

As the graph shows, the vast majority of property investors owned one investment property (71.5%), two (18.9%) or three (5.8%).

A small share had substantial portfolios, with 2.1% of investors owning four investment properties, 0.9% owning five and another 0.9% owning six or more.

If you want to buy multiple properties, itโ€™s vital you get the loan structure right, which is why so many investors rely on mortgage brokers. Many investors also seek expert advice from buyerโ€™s agents, so they can buy properties that are likely to outperform the market.
